I thought about something tonight. I thought about "easy" and our perception of what easy is; how it varies from person to person.
In 'The Way We Were' there's a scene about what is "easy." We all know the dynamic of the two characters: Katie pushes and Hubbell is easy going. The viewer's perception of Hubbell is only through Katie's monologue as she narrates the story, as well as from what we see of his effortless interactions with other characters and scenarios. Hubbell never struggles. Or so it seems.
Women are not easy. We are not necessarily a science, we are not beautiful creatures that come with a set of instructions, and sometimes we don't even know WHAT we want - there is nothing easy about women. But there is one universal constant, an undeniable truth; women want love. Or at least the HOPE that love exists. They want the butterflies, the smiles, the kisses, hell they'll even settle for the lies. But let us have our fantasy. Let us believe there is something "more", something to look forward to. Let us dream.
After Katie cries to Hubbell that he has it so "easy" while she struggles to keep him, he responds with the cold truth that we hadn't realized, he says, "THIS is easy? You think YOU'RE easy?" and to be honest - we are not easy. But nothing worth working for ever is? Right?
